Binaural beats are a perceptual auditory phenomenon that emerges when two slightly different frequencies are presented separately to each ear. If the left ear receives a tone at 300 Hz and the right ear at 310 Hz, the binaural frequency is 10 Hz. The human auditory system perceives this frequency difference. In the above example, the listener would perceive a “beat” or pulsation at a frequency of 10 Hz (the difference between the two tones), even though no 10 Hz tone is being presented. The generation of binaural beats is believed to be rooted in the superior olivary complex (a part of the brainstem), where neural circuits can detect the difference in frequencies from the two ears and create the perception of the binaural beat.

Studies suggest that listening to binaural beats can influence brainwave activity. The idea is that the brain might try to “match” or “synchronize” its own brainwave patterns to the frequency of the binaural beat. This phenomenon is called brainwave entrainment. If a listener perceives a binaural beat at 10 Hz (which is within the alpha brainwave range, their brain is likely to shift towards producing more alpha brainwave activity.

Binaural beats have been explored for various therapeutic applications, including relaxation, meditation, stress reduction, pain management, improved sleep, learning, and even cognitive enhancement.
