Hello brothers and sisters, and welcome to the Jungian Aion!
Enjoy this captivating glimpse into the life of Carl Jung as he carves his soul into stone. Witness the artistry and spirit behind his handcrafted tower, a testament to his dedication and vision. Hear him bring to life the profound inscriptions he chiseled into the stone. This magical moment reveals a man who turned his inner world into enduring symbols, leaving us not just a legacy, but psychic maps to navigate the depths of the human psyche.
In 1951, Carl Jung was filmed at his Bollingen retreat by two Americans: Jerome Hill, an artist and filmmaker from Minnesota, and Maud Oakes, an author and researcher. Maud was known for her book ‘Where the Two Came to Their Father’, which detailed a ritual and ceremonial sequence shared by a Navajo Medicine Man, accompanied by sand paintings. This work marked the first significant publication of the Bollingen Foundation. Fascinated by Jung’s psychology of the collective unconscious, Maud had met him in 1937 during a lecture he gave in New York.
Inspired by Jung’s 75th birthday in 1950, Maud’s cousin, Jerome Hill, proposed creating a film about him. Initially hesitant, Jung eventually agreed to begin filming in 1951, although the project was never completed. Hill later gained recognition for his award-winning documentary about Dr. Albert Schweitzer.
The surviving footage captures Jung in his garden, discussing the large stone he carved to commemorate his 75th birthday. In the film, Jung reads and translates Greek and Latin passages referencing the ancient wisdom of the alchemists and the Greek god of medicine, Asclepius, along with his guiding figure, Telesphoros. The excerpts are narrated by Jungian analyst Suzanne Wagner, Ph.D.
I strive to mediate the profound light that Jung himself brought forth through his work and life. It is part of my life’s purpose. In many ways, we modern humans have lost touch with the core of our being—our psyche, our soul. Jung guides us back to that source in a way uniquely suited to our modern consciousness. Through his teachings, I have found the most meaningful path toward realizing my own potential for wholeness, joy, maturity, and creativity.
Jung mapped the inner world with remarkable clarity, revealing where our psyche and civilization stand and what is necessary for our individual and collective growth. With his guidance, I hope we can keep our inner flames burning in the midst of the darkness that surrounds and inhabits us, thus promoting in our world and selves – health, courage, and reflection.
