Tightening A Skid Steer Alternator Belt

My skid steer is making a crazy squealing noise, whenever you give it a little throttle.

Let’s see if we can figure out what’s going on.

I’m pretty sure it’s just a loose belt- the first thing I need to do is get this cover off.

There’s two bolts on the top, one in the middle, and two more on the bottom- all 4 millimeter allen heads.

Of course I dropped a bolt and it fell down underneath the engine.

Looks like there’s a cover underneath that I can remove and it should fall out.

See how loose the alternator belt is- that’s what squealing.

First, I loosen the bottom bolt on the alternator so it can pivot, and then the top bolt in the tensioner bracket.

Next, I carefully use a pry bar to rotate the alternator till I get the right amount of tension on the belt.

Finally, I tighten both the tension bolt and pivot bolt to lock it in place.

Let’s fired it up and test it out- no more squealIng.

Let me know in the comments- does anyone else use their phone to video in tight spaces to find a dropped bolt? @hausplans
