In The Soldier and The Survivor, we tell a story of survival from Guatemala’s Dos Erres Massacre during which soldiers stormed a village killing nearly everyone. One of those soldiers was Santos Lopez Alonzo who spared the life of five-year-old Ramiro Cristales then raised him in a home where Cristales says he was treated like a “slave.” Cristales would later be granted asylum in Canada and give testimony that would help put the man who kidnapped him behind bars. Now, he and many others worry proposed legislation in the Guatemalan Congress could reverse the prison sentences of those found guilty of war crimes.
