Stripping Topsoil and Compacting Gravel to Build a Parking Lot

I need to add three additional parking spots for this warehouse we’re building.
I take the measurements from the plans and start laying everything out using spray paint and strings.
I like to use a stake and a string to get my radiuses, this works great when you’re working by yourself.
Next, I get in my skid steer and start stripping the topsoil off.
It’s important to get rid of all the topsoil so we’re building up from a clay base.
Here you can see the color difference between the dark topsoil and the lighter yellowish clay.
Once I’m down to solid clay, I start layering in gravel.
This material is actually a mixture of 4” stone, crushed stone, and clay.
I compact it with a roller; then I add another layer of gravel.
I find it’s easier to pile it at the end and back drag it smooth.
I try to layer the gravel in 8” lifts.
Here I bring in my final row of gravel and level it out.
Working in layers or lifts ensures that the roller compacts everything tight so you have a firm base.
This isn’t the final elevation- the whole parking lot still gets a layer of 21A.
Let me know how many equipment hours you think it took to get this put in. @hausplans
