In 1979 the discovery of two tiny silver amulets in a c. 600 bce Jerusalem tomb revealed the oldest Israelite ‘scripture’ to date, a section of Numbers 6:24–26 known famously as the Priestly Blessing. What might it mean to have discovered the earliest text of what would become “The Bible” in apparently magical amulets, the very kind of magic “the Bible” is generally thought to condemn? Further, what do we learn about Israelite ritual practices, afterlife and magic by comparing these amulets to similar amulets recovered around the same time? Let’s explore the discovery, nature and implications of the discovery of the oldest Israelite ‘scripture’ in the Yahweh Blessing Amulets found at Ketef Hinnom.
