In 1986, The Fifth Estate sat down with members of the Stopwatch Gang, whose heists, bank robberies and prison escapes spanned years across the U.S. and Canada.
But co-host Bob McKeown had met gang member Stephen Reid before he became a journalist — and before he knew Reid was a bank robber. Back when McKeown was a football player, they drank beers together in an Ottawa bar.
Years later, because he trusted McKeown, Reid would tell The Fifth Estate about his time in the gang.
The Fifth Estate is marking its 50th year of investigative journalism. Watch “The Stopwatch Gang” (1986) and “My Friend the Bank Robber” (2011) hosted by Bob McKeown, and more from the show’s files, on our channel.
