The sextortion of Amanda Todd | The Fifth Estate

July 25, 2025 7700 Views

In 2013, The Fifth Estate exposed how an online predator blackmailed Amanda Todd, a B.C. teen, with explicit photos, in a practice that became known as “sextortion.”

Todd was haunted by a single frame from a webcam live stream showing her with her chest exposed. After years of cyberbullying and harrassment, she died by suicide. Her mother felt RCMP didn’t do enough to investigate who was extorting Todd before she died.

Todd’s parents shared two of her computers with The Fifth Estate and gave permission to review hundreds of chat logs.

Aydin Coban, the man who targeted Todd, was convicted of extorting and harassing her in 2022.

The Fifth Estate is marking its 50th year of investigative journalism. Watch The Sextortion of Amanda Todd, hosted by Mark Kelley, and more from the show’s files, at the link in our bio. #TheFifthEstate #CBCNews
