Installing Rebar In A Concrete Patio

I’m going to show you the best way to install rebar in this patio on the new house we’re building.
First, we need to bend these pieces down.
I intentionally left this rebar long sticking out of the piers so they could be bent down and tied into the grid.
The concrete in this area of the patio gets poured a foot thick creating a grade beam over the piers. This will support the front edge of the slab.
I like to use these slab bolster rebar chairs, so you might be asking why don’t I use plastic chairs.
Well, this is why- because they break.
When I’m cutting rebar to length of the mat- I make sure it’s a least 2” from touching the form boards.
This way it gets fully encased in concrete and isn’t exposed to oxygen, so it doesn’t
rust.
We’re using ½” rebar for this job and running it 18” on center both directions.
If you do a lot of concrete work, I definitely recommend getting one of these automatic rebar tiers.
It feeds wire from a spool of wire like this and ties a piece of rebar in 1/2 a second.
I’ve had people say they can tie just as fast by hand- I say there’s no way.
Up next, we’re going to pour this patio, and stamp it with a slate texture. @hausplans
