I built a vault room underneath the garage on the new house we’re building and half the internet told me it would collapse the first time I drive on it.
So, what happened?
First, let me show you the room. It’s got a 1500-pound steel Fort Knox door.
All four walls are solid 10” thick reinforced concrete.
And the ceiling? The ceiling is my garage floor.
There’s no beams just galvanized metal decking and 6” of concrete.
Now this floor was designed by an engineer and we had it inspected.
We built two temporary support walls that were removed once the concrete cured.
All the laps in the decking were screwed together and I installed a rebar mat with ½” rebar at 18 inches on center.
Finally, we poured 6” of concrete on top of the metal decking.
So, what happened when I drove on it for the very first time today.
Keep in mind this Toyota Land Cruiser weighs over 5000 pounds.
Despite all the people saying it’s going to collapse- nothing happened.
