Metaphysical pessimism – that existence itself is ultimately for the worse – is powerfully represented in the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer. But he wasn’t satisfied with mere philosophical proofs for his contention that Reality itself was fundamentally Will, a ceaseless ontological becoming. Schopenhauer sought to find the Will in nature itself, especially in the occult dimensions of Nature. In several important essays, Schopenhauer argues for how the manifestation of Spirits, Divination, Animal Magnetism and Magic were all proofs for the existence for the Metaphysical Will.
