Can you make $130,000 a year with a skid steer?
Let’s do the math and find out.
The hourly rate for skid steer work, including the operator in most areas, ranges between 100 to 130 dollars an hour.
Using 110 dollars and hour- If you can average four 8-hour days a week leaving out one day a week for bad weather, maintenance, and vacation time- that’s $183,040 per year.
Now let’s subtract all the costs:
You can buy a decent used track skid steer for around $60,000.
If you borrow the full amount on a 3-year loan at a 6% interest rate it will cost $21,900 a year.
You’re going to burn around 20 gallons of off-road diesel per day- at $3.80 a gallon that’s $76 a day and $15,808 for the year.
Figure another $15,000 for insurance, maintenance, and consumables like tracks, filters, grease, and oil.
After all these costs that leaves a profit of $130,332 a year.
