Vancouver’s Sky ECC promised privacy to customers with its encrypted cellphones, which became a hit with the criminal underworld.
But after police cracked the code and unlocked thousands of messages between criminals, the phones became the target of an international police sting. Police watched as criminals freely sent each other text messages and pictures of piles of money, drugs, weapons and even kidnappings.
