We have all heard the expression, attributed to the WWII era German Propaganda Minister, “You have nothing to fear if you have nothing to hide”. This statement is weapons grade propaganda as it frames any debate about surveillance / privacy as being between “bad people” with something to hide and “good people” who don’t care about privacy because because they aren’t doing anything wrong.
Privacy is about consent. As a free, independent adult, we should all have the right to decide what we want to share about ourselves, from our travels to our purchases to our intimate thoughts when, where, how, and with whom we choose to share that information. But surveillance, both by government and big tech, denies us that right by collecting and selling / sharing our personal information without our informed consent (and uninformed consent is meaningless as people cannot consent if they aren’t made aware of what will be done with their data).
