Digging Out an Entire Basement with the All-New Cat 285 @catconstructiontrade #sponsored

Can you dig out an entire basement with a skid steer? Let’s find out. @catconstructiontrade
Cat just introduced their all new 285 and it’s massive. It’s the largest CTL they’ve ever made- you can see here how it dwarfs my 259B3.
Even the bucket is huge- big enough to take a nap in. Seriously, it’s over 91” wide.
The first thing I do when I’m excavating a basement is strip off all the topsoil.
I like to pile it far away from the building site so it’s not in the way.
We’ll spread this topsoil around at the end of the project for a nice yard.
With the 285 I had this done in no time and there were fewer trips back and forth.
Next, I ran into a layer of hard shale, but I was impressed the 285 had both the weight and horsepower to dig right through it.
This machine weighs in a little over 13,300 pounds and has 111 horsepower, and the XE model has 134 horsepower.
Also, the lift height is impressive at 146”- that’s over 12 feet.
I’m actually planning to use this shale later to build up my driveway so I put it in its own separate pile.
I was having so much fun before I knew it, the job was done.
Let me know in the comments if you need a basement dug out- I’ll be right over. @hausplans
