In the rare circumstances where an aircraft pilot loses control of their planes’ descent, the results can be among the worst disasters in aviation history. This episode explores why and how descents can sometimes go badly wrong.
In 1988 a plane air crash happened at a Air France airshow stunt. A Airbus 320-111 descended too low during a low fly-by and tragically killed three members of the public. Unfortunately dangerous descents don’t only happen at airshows and this programme will also look at how uncontrolled descents during a commercial craft’s runway landing, can have deadly consequences for everyone on board.
How on November 14th, 1970 a DC9 carrying the Marshall University Football Team was approaching to land at the airport in Huntington, West Virginia. But the aircraft doesn’t stop its descent at 1240 feet as instructed. And how on 20th December 1995 American Airlines Flight 965 crashes on its approach to Cali, Colombia.
