I started to install this access panel over the water shut-off valve the other day and realized I forgot to have the plumbers tie the PEX into the main line before we drywalled.
So, I cut an access hole for them to crimp on a piece of PEX.
But now the pressure reducing valve is too high to be adjusted.
So, I’m going to patch that hole, and raise the access panel opening.
The first thing I did was cut two ¾” strips of wood to use as drywall backers.
I put a screw in the middle of the strip– it works like a handle and makes it easier to hold on to.
I used some leftover Advantech Subfloor Adhesive on the backers to help hold them in place and it worked really well.
It’s always a good idea to save the piece you cut out, so that you can put it back in the same spot.
A little more glue and a couple of screws and it’s good to go.
Next, I use my two-foot level to mark out the piece I want to cut out to raise my access panel.
This will give me room in case I ever need to adjust the water pressure on the reducing valve.
I glue and screw in a piece of ¾” plywood and then take the piece of drywall we cut from above and install it below.
Now I test fit my access panel- I’ve got good access to both the shut-off and pressure reducing valves.
Let me know in the comments- what’s something that got overlooked on your project? @hausplans
