Greenland Vikings: The Doomed Colony | Ancient Apocalypse | Documentary

Led by Erik the Red, in 985 AD, an initial wave of Vikings from Scandinavia established two thriving Norse settlements along the fjords of Southern Greenland – the ‘Eastern’ and ‘Western’ settlements. At their peak, these Viking communities numbered around 4,000 people, who constructed Norse manor houses and worked the unforgiving terrain to sustain their European pastoralist lifestyle. The Vikings raised sheep, goats, and cattle while the Norse settlers engaged in extensive trade, exporting furs, walrus-tusk ivory, and other Arctic goods to Europe. For centuries, the Vikings of Greenland maintained a near-monopoly on the European ivory trade, with the bulk of it derived from walruses hunted by the Norse. Despite their commercial success, the Norse Vikings mysteriously vanished from historical records at the start of the 15th century. The disappearance of the Norse remains one of archaeology’s enduring mysteries, leaving questions about the fate of these Viking settlers unanswered.
