Born in Krakow Poland in 1871, Rubinstein moved to Melbourne in 1896 after her refusal to an arranged marriage.
With finance and advise from a business friend called James Henry Thompson, she opened her first beauty salon in 1902 in Melbourne. From this point onward Rubinstein’s story is a mix of fact and myth.
By 1908, with several salons open in Australia, she and her new husband Titus moved to Mayfair in London and opened a salon there. She sold makeup, skin tonics and beauty booklets. She was also a major exponent of the beauty facial. In particularly the facial massage. She explained, that massage improved circulation “which restores the contour of features, retrace lovely curves, which age and time can blur. Massage will also bridge-over, round out and fill out furrows, reducing the severity of the face.
In 1916, Helena established her business in America, opening beauty salons from New York to San Francisco.
