This video describes the key experiments that were performed to elucidate the modern structure of the atom. It starts by discussing Dalton’s theory that the atom was indivisible. It then explains how the cathode ray tube experiment by Thomson established that atoms contain negatively charged particles called electrons and led to the plum pudding model of the atom. Subsequently Millikan’s oil drop experiment, which established the charge and mass of an electron is described. Finally, Rutherford’s gold foil experiment, which disproved the plum pudding model of the atom and established the modern structure of an atom, a dense positively charged nucleus with surrounding electrons, is presented.
