How Does Uncoupling Membrane Work?

It’s always been a dream of mine to have an entire floor made out of blue legos.
Actually, this is an uncoupling membrane that is used underneath tile floors.
It has these circular cells that hold mortar on the top and an engineered fleece on the bottom.
So, I get to work with one of the best tile guys around- let’s call him Bradley, because this guy actually looks like Bradley Cooper.
He was laying tile before he could even walk and built his first shower at age 5.
He agreed to let me video him installing this membrane.
So, what in the world is uncoupling membrane and what does it do?
It creates a flexible buffer between the subfloor and the tile- this way if there’s any movement in the subfloor it doesn’t affect tile above, isolating the two materials.
This type of membrane can be used on concrete slabs, plywood, and even tile to tile applications.
It also acts as a vapor barrier and can easily be cut with a utility knife.
Once it was installed he went over everything with this membrane roller- it actually uses a box of tile for the weight.
Let me know in the comments- do you think we should keep the blue floor, or lay tile on top? @hausplans
