Filter fabric is used in construction to protect the foundation’s drain system
Without it, the foundation drain and crushed stone above it can get clogged with silt and other debris.
Not only can this lead to a wet basement or crawlspace, but in some cases even cause the foundation to settle.
Here you can see I’m placing some wet mud and silt directly on top of this filter fabric.
This fabric might look fragile, but it plays an important role.
Watch as I wind it up – see how it allows the water to pass through but traps the mud and other fine material behind?
Most modern foundations have drain tile or slotted pipe next to the footing that gets covered in crushed stone.
A layer of filter fabric then gets placed directly on top of the stone before backfilling with dirt or topsoil.
Now rain and groundwater can pass through the filter fabric, through the clean stone, and then exit out the drain tile.
