I just hired this guy to backfill around my new house- he said his name was Exca-Vator and his helper’s name was Mini Exca-Vator.
This guy gave off kind of a weird vibe, but once I saw him operating I was impressed.
Now I had already filled up around the foundation with crushed stone and then we put down a layer of filter fabric.
The filter fabric prevents silt from washing into the stone and keeps is clean.
I’m not ready to grade up the entire yard, I just want him to fill in the over dig around the house.
I asked him to use the dirt that was piled at the back of the house from when we dug out the basement.
On some jobs there’s extra dirt that has to be hauled away. For this job I’m probably going to have to haul in 30-50 loads.
It’s important when you’re grading up to slope everything away from the house.
In our area code requires that you slope away a minimum of six inches over the first ten feet.
Because there’s no gutter at this stage, I like to put straw around the foundation.
This keeps the water that pours off the roof from splattering mud up onto the brick, which can permanently stain it.
This guy did a good job over all, but I thought his bill was outrageous.
Let me know in the comments- what do you guys think? @hausplans
