I just paid $32,000 to put in a 4-bedroom septic system for our new house.
This price did not include reseeding, so to save money I did it myself.
I spent $150 for 150 pounds of contractor mix grass seed.
This mix includes an annual rye that comes up fast, but dies after one year; and fescue seed that’s permanent.
Next up, I rented a straw blower.
The straw blower rents for $180 a day plus fuel.
This is way faster than spreading it by hand.
It chops the straw up, so it lays flat on the ground- making it less likely to get blown away by the wind.
I used my Ventrac to tow the straw blower, but I had to keep getting off to move it every couple minutes.
So I called The New Guy and asked him to drive the tractor – he billed me $120 for his time.
I bought 42 bales from a friend who is a local farmer. I paid $150 for the straw.
When you’re using one of these blowers you have to work with the wind.
All in I spent $600 dollars reseeding the septic field.
Let me know in the comments, how much money do you think I saved by doing it myself? @hausplans
