Installing 8×8 Douglas Fir Posts on This Porch

First, I mounted these Simpson Concealed Bases, so I could get an exact measurement for the post length.
No wait- the first thing I did was use my laser to mark the exact location for the post base.
Once I had my measurement, I carefully marked and cut each post.
I cut all four sides since the blade wouldn’t fit the whole way through and finished the middle with a hand saw.
We used a post base as template, so we knew exactly where to drill the holes for the pins.
After all three holes were drilled- I marked the location for the bracket slot.
I first cut with a skill saw- this cut acted as a guide that I widened with the chain saw.
We put a coat of stain on the bottom of the posts to protect them.
Once slid into place we put the middle pin in first; then, before installing the other two pins, we made sure the post was plumb.
We used Simpson “L” brackets along with their wood screws and hex head washers to secure them to the beam above- together these screws and washers give the look of a bolt.
Finally, we put the other two pins in.
Here it is all finished up with the post base trim installed to hide the holes. @hausplans
