Installing Hurricane Ties So Our Roof Won’t Fly Off In A Storm

This sixty-cent piece of metal could keep the roof from blowing off your house.
It’s a hurricane tie and it ties the roof truss to the top of the wall.
Typically roof trusses are installed with a nail gun- with two nails on one side and one on the other.
This metal clip uses five nails on the side of the truss and five more on the double plate at the top of the wall.
Now these work great, but they do take some time to install, and they can hold the drywall out a bit.
Another option is these Simpson Truss Screws.
These are installed through the bottom of the double plate up into the truss.
The screws are painted bright orange so the inspectors can see that you installed them.
The box of screws includes a template so you can put the screws in at an angle if there’s a stud or header directly underneath the truss.
Now the New Guy’s nervous. He’s been reading all the comments from Europeans saying American wood houses fly apart in storms, so he asked me to put some hurricane clips on his house.
I’m starting to wish I made his house a little bigger. And let me tell you what he’s a real micro-manager.
Let me know in the comments if you think the New Guy will be safe in his little house. @hausplans
