Justin Hansford holds the prestigious position of Professor of Law at Howard University School of Law and is also the dedicated Executive Director of the Thurgood Marshall Civil Rights Center.
Professor Hansford’s illustrious career path has seen him flourish as a Democracy Project Fellow at Harvard University, a Visiting Professor of Law at Georgetown University Law Center, and an Associate Professor of Law at Saint Louis University. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree from Howard University and a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from Georgetown University Law Center, where he played a pivotal role as a co-founder of the Georgetown Journal of Law and Modern Critical Race Perspectives. In addition to these achievements, Professor Hansford has been honored with a Fulbright Scholar award, which he used to study the legal career of Nelson Mandela. Furthermore, he proudly served as a clerk for Judge Damon J. Keith on the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
Professor Hansford is an eminent figure in the realms of critical race theory, human rights, and the interplay between law and social movements. Notably, he co-authored the forthcoming Seventh Edition of “Race, Racism and American Law,” a celebrated legal textbook that marked the first of its kind to cater specifically to race-related law courses. His interdisciplinary scholarship is featured in prominent academic journals across various universities, including Harvard, Georgetown, Fordham, and the University of California at Hastings. He has also played a pivotal role as a member of the Stanford Medicine Commission on Justice and Equity, contributing to vital conversations in the field of healthcare and justice.
One of Professor Hansford’s most impactful endeavors came in the wake of the tragic killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. Demonstrating his unwavering commitment to social justice, Hansford engaged in empowering the Ferguson community through community-based legal advocacy. His co-authorship of the “Ferguson to Geneva human rights shadow report” and his dedicated effort to accompany Ferguson protesters and Mike Brown’s family to Geneva, Switzerland, where they testified at the United Nations, underscore his profound dedication to advancing civil rights and social justice on a global scale.
