Customer loyalty cards (aka Rewards Programs) have been around for years but few people think about how much data these programs collect about them and what else that data could be used for.
The concept of “dual use” technology is that some technologies such as lasers and GPS satellites have both commercial and military applications. The same is true of Customer Loyalty Cards. There are legitimate reasons why a company may want customers to participate in a loyalty program to better serve the customer but sometimes the program is more about collecting data to be sold to 3rd parties including government agencies and insurance companies.
