After a global catastrophe, the last remnants of humanity take refuge in an underground city called Ember, powered by a massive but deteriorating generator. Built by mysterious “Builders” with a secret escape plan stored in a timed lockbox, the city was meant to be a temporary sanctuary. But after generations of forgetting, the plan is lost. As Ember’s power supply begins to fail, two young citizens — Lina and Doon — uncover ancient clues that lead them on a race against time to rediscover the surface world and reveal the truth hidden beneath their collapsing civilization.
