Set in a futuristic, stratified city, Metropolis portrays a stark divide between a wealthy ruling class living in luxury above ground and an oppressed worker class laboring in subterranean hellscapes to keep the city running. When Freder, the privileged son of the city’s master planner, discovers the brutal conditions below, he’s inspired by a compassionate worker prophet named Maria to bridge the gap between the two worlds. But the elite counter this spiritual movement by creating a robot duplicate of Maria, designed to incite chaos and discredit the uprising. As rebellion erupts and truth unravels, Metropolis reveals deep esoteric messages about control, false saviors, synthetic revolutions, and the machinery of civilization itself.
