The Orphic Mysteries remain as obscure as they are fascinating. Indeed, they are responsible for the oldest surviving book manuscript in European history. Discovered in the charred remains of a funeral pyre, the Derveni Papyrus is an amazing combination of ancient Greek mystery religion and the scientific/philosophical revolutions of the 5th century BCE – here Orpheus meets Heraclitus and Anaxagoras.
