Critical Theory or the Frankfurt School has been accused by modern spiritual seekers as mercilessly continuing Marx’s materialist criticism of religion as alienated delusion, by itself being inspired by messianic ideas found in the Kabbalah yet simultaneously by the far right as purposely injecting occultism into popular culture as a means to destroy ‘traditional Western Judeo-Christian values.’ But what did members of the Frankfurt school actually write about occultism? In this series with @drangelapuca we will be carefully reading and unpacking Adorno’s difficult 1947 polemic “Theses Against Occultism” especially with an idea to recent thinking on the enchantment/disenchantment of modernity, the relationship of occultism to the ‘political spectrum,’ the historical context of this text (e.g., it was written the same year Aleister Crowley died) and to what degree does Adorno simply misunderstand or misrepresent the occult and occult spirituality.
