In March 2002, The Fifth Estate’s investigation showed how a surgical patch taken from the brain tissue of cadavers could lead to a brain wasting illness called Creutzfeld-Jakob disease.
Co-host Hana Gartner further uncovered how the patch, called Lyodura, was not disinfected properly, and some of the tissue was stolen from corpses on an illegal medical black market. A vastly ineffective product recall also kept the product on hospital shelves after the connection was made to the brain wasting disease.
The Fifth Estate is marking its 50th year of investigative journalism. Watch “Deadly Harvest” hosted by former co-host Hana Gartner and more from the show’s files on YouTube.
