In 1993, journalist Kevin Carter travelled to Sudan to cover the devastating famine. In the
worst effected areas, almost half of all children were malnourished, and dozens of people
died every day. Carter was invited to cover the story by the UN, and saw it as an
opportunity to advance his career.
During his time in Sudan, Kevin took a photo titled “The Vulture and the Little Girl”. The
image showed an emaciated child collapsed on the ground in exhaustion, as a vulture sat
on the ground behind, watching and waiting. The image was published in the New York
Times, but soon spread all around the world, becoming an important symbol of the
famine.
