Using a Tub Box for Shower Installation

When installing under slab plumbing for a tub or shower it’s almost impossible to get the drain exactly where it needs to go.
So, we use a tub box like this one- it’s basically just a plastic box that’s turned upside down.
It keeps the concrete away from the pipe- this way the plumber has extra room to adjust the trap so it will line up with the drain in the shower.
Here’s what it looks like before we poured concrete.
I like to frame the rough openings for fiberglass showers and tubs at least a ¼” larger than the specs call for.
Because the units are molded, they are almost never perfectly straight; and it can be hard getting them to fit if you frame the opening the exact size.
I slid the shower in place so you can see how it fits.
The plumbers will need to pull it back out so they can install the trap underneath, but then they’ll slide it back in and hook it all up.
Let me know if you’d like to see the entire installation. @hausplans
