Was She a Heretic or a Mystical Martyr? Marguerite Porete & The Mirror of Simple Souls

May 2, 2025 52898 Views

On June 1 1310, the Inquisition incinerated the flesh of Marguerite Porete, making her the first person executed for mystical heresy in the Latin West. Her book, The Mirror of the Simple Souls Who Are Annihilated and Remain Only in Will and Desire of Love, laid claim to a mystical itinerary by which the soul could go beyond mere Salvation to Unity with the Divine through the free surrender of one’s will into the Divine Abyss. The Inquisition held that her teachings led to antinomianism, no need for an external Church or even the Consolations of God. But what does the Mirror actually teach? What did her execution have to do with the suppression of the Templars? And, was she really a heretic at all? Let’s explore the mystical teachings of Marguerite Porete.
