Keeping a pet lion in your backyard is my metaphor for companies that traffic our personal information. If you choose to engage in this activity, you have both a moral and legal responsibility to exercise due diligence to prevent harm from coming to other people and/or their property. National Public Data failed miserably and allowed hackers to steal 2.9 BILLION records including people’s Social Security Numbers putting hundreds of millions of people at HIGH risk of identity theft. There has already been a class action suit filed against them but CLEARLY lawsuits are not enough to rein in the abuses of data brokers. This video makes the case for a Sarbanes-Oxley style law that would hold officers of companies personally liable when they allow data to be stolen. If they can’t keep the data safe, they shouldn’t be collecting it in the first place.
