Centuries following his death, Peter of Abano was known as the greatest sorcerer of his day. Born in the 1250s, he would compose a huge variety of works attempting to reconcile the philosophy of Aristotle, medical theory and practice, Astrology and Natural Magic. He would also delve into the world of Astral Necromancy, the nature of Incantations and the power of Poison and be tried by the Inquisition twice. Eventually manuals of demonic conjuration and the production of magical rings would be attributed Peter. But, what was the historical Peter of Abano’s position on these questions, especially that of Sorcery? Let’s explore the life, times and works of one of greatest minds of the Middle Ages!
